CHAPTER TWELVE

After breakfast with Charlie and the teens, Henry sent a text to Boris asking about the Midnight Collective. He didn’t wait for a reply but went to his bedroom and fell asleep. He woke at a quarter past noon. It had been a nap devoid of dreams, a dead sleep that he wouldn’t have woken from for hours if not for the voices in the hall.

“What’s it say?” Rami asked.

Trent replied, “Not any more than last time. Sorry, bro. Now do me!”

“All right. Get over here. Right there. Don’t move. Shit, your stupid mohawk is getting in the way!”

Henry got out of bed and stalked to the door. He threw it open, more confused than anything, but Rami and Trent took his abrupt appearance as anger and shrank away, apologizing profusely.

“It’s all right,” Henry told them. “What the hell are you doing?”

Rami let the tape measure slide back up into its housing. “Just measuring each other. To see if we got any taller. Now that we’re eating good food, we thought we might have grown.”

“That’s the saddest thing I’ve heard since they canceled Ash vs. Evil Dead. What’s the verdict? Any taller?”

“Nah, man.” Trent sighed and used both hands to slick his mohawk up. “Just gotta keep the hair growing. Every extra inch counts, especially when it comes to the ladies.”

Rami waved both hands. “We weren’t measuring that part.” He looked down at the tape measure, then slowly tucked it into his pocket. “I, uh, gotta go to the bathroom.”

Henry grabbed him by the arm before he could get away and pulled the tape measure out. “Tell me where Ellie is, and I’ll forget about this extremely awkward exchange.”

Rami blushed. “You’d do that for me? That means a lot. I think she’s in the cave. Working out or training or something. I saw Carli coming upstairs a little while ago with a bloody nose, so I guess they’re doing some intense sparring.”

“Thanks. You’re free to go.” Henry headed down the stairs, shaking his head. Teenage boys are disgusting. And stupid. Everyone knows the best way is to measure something else first, like your forearm, and compare it to that.

Carli was sitting in the library when Henry entered. She held a tissue to her nose as she leafed through a leatherbound tome.

He bent to see the title. “Encyclopedia Magica Volume 1. By Dale Henson. Never heard of him.” Henry straightened and grabbed a fresh tissue from the box on the arm of Carli’s chair. He handed it to her. “Is that something you ordered off the magical dark web?”

She nodded her thanks and replaced the bloody tissue with the fresh one. “We ordered this used off eBay. It’s a Dungeons and Dragons book. Shia wanted to play, but he thinks I would make the best Dungeon Master.”

“I can see that. Because apparently, you aren’t great in a fight.”

Carlie shrugged, snorted back the blood in her nose, and gagged. “Ew. Swallowed a clot or something. Anyway, I don’t think I’m that bad.
